![]() Why would they change their behavior? What's the motivation to do so? It's working. At some point, in regard to WGing, you can't blame them for what they're doing: they let quality slide but people still rush to throw money at them. He is a character with a specific personality that is designed for character growth that never happened. Nothing changes and his particular personality gets very old. He doesn't become a better person or spiral into the same nihilistic hole his father did out of bitterness. There was a good character established, I won't argue against that, but there was little to no character growth.Īnd that's why people hate Shinji Ikari as a character. The problem is he didn't change throughout the series, from his experiences and the people around him. The problem with him isn't that he has a believable personality. Ironically in the newer Rebuild of Evangelion movies, where Shinji was comparatively happier and developed a semblance of backbone, he ends up destroying the world by trying to do the heroic/right thing. Most anime characters shrug off not having proper parents or being in life and death situations, but that sort of things messes up people for life. It was an excellent deconstruction of a character that's the target of bullying and parental neglect. Everyone kept treating him like dirt, so I don't blame him for not caring about the world anymore. You don't become a better person because you fight monsters to save the world. Since Shinji never got validation from his father, and no one respected him, and he was constantly put in extreme situations, his character flaws never went away, which makes total sense to me. When he gained confidence, it was usually driven out of anger issues or suicidal fear. The parental neglect, and bullying from his classmates left him with a very low self esteem and gave him confidence issues. I understood why he was the way he was very well. Shinji was a very well developed character.
